The public sees AI through applications.

Chatbots.

Image generators.

Coding assistants.

Search.

But the deeper competition is happening underneath.

Who controls the infrastructure?

Layer one: compute

Advanced accelerators are essential to modern AI.

Whoever has access to large quantities of high-performance compute has an enormous advantage.

But compute isn't simply about owning chips.

You need somewhere to put them.

Layer two: data centers

A chip sitting in a warehouse produces nothing.

It needs a data center.

That means construction capacity becomes part of AI strategy.

Layer three: electricity

Then the data center needs power.

Large AI facilities can create significant local electricity demand, making grid availability increasingly important.

Layer four: networks

The machines must communicate.

That requires high-speed networking inside facilities and connectivity between facilities.

Layer five: software

Only then do you get the software infrastructure that turns all this hardware into usable AI capacity.

The result is a stack:

Energy → Data centers → Compute → Networks → Models → Applications

The companies that control different layers may have very different economics.

And the biggest AI businesses of the future may not all sit at the application layer.
